Credit Card Protection

***This post contains affiliate links.

If you live in the U.S., you may not be aware of a new chip that is being put in credit cards.  It seems that banks are just starting to do this, although they have been in use in other countries for quite some time.  So, rather than swiping your card (with the magnetic strip on the back), you insert your card into a machine and it reads the chip.  Banks are talking about how great these are, but my banks have left out some very important information.  These cards are easily hacked!

A radio-frequency identification device (RFID) can steal your card information without having your card.  A person just needs to walk past you and your card and the information can be stolen.  Shocking, right?

So, how do you know if your credit card has the chip?  Take a look at the demo card below.  The chip is the square on the left.

If you have a credit card with a chip, you MUST protect it and there are different ways of doing this.  First, you can get a protective sleeve for each card.  Here's the kind I got.
Number 1 in service Credit Card & Passport Holders Case Set with 5 Credit Card Sleeves & 1 Passport Holder
You can also get a credit card wallet that is RFID blocking.  I got this one from Amazon.com.
Shell-D RFID Aluminum Wallet Credit Card Holder- Prevent Electronic Scan Theft - Cool Slim Design for Men & Women - 100% Money Back Guarantee, Gray

This new chip technology may be a great thing (although I'm not sure why), but protect your information and get some kind of RFID blocking product.

  1. I thought "they" changed from the strip to the chip because it couldn't be hacked. Oh my, it seems nothing is safe without taking extra measures these days.
